Getting Started with Bloons Tower Defense

Bloons Tower Defense (BTD) is a tower defense game where waves of balloons — called bloons — travel along a path, and your job is to pop them all before they escape. While the concept is simple, the strategy goes surprisingly deep. These tips will get you off to a strong start.

1. Always Place a Dart Monkey First

Dart Monkeys are cheap and versatile. In the early rounds, a few well-placed Dart Monkeys near a curve in the path will cover your initial waves without burning through your budget. Save your cash for stronger towers later.

2. Curves Are Your Best Friend

Towers attack in a radius around themselves. Placing towers on or near sharp curves in the bloon path means they hit bloons multiple times as they travel around the bend. This dramatically increases your damage output per tower.

3. Don't Neglect Lead Bloons

Regular Dart Monkeys cannot pop Lead Bloons. You need a Bomb Tower or a Super Monkey to deal with them. Always have at least one tower that can handle Leads before they appear — usually around round 28.

4. Upgrade Smart, Not Fast

You can upgrade each tower twice on two separate upgrade paths. Generally:

  • Prioritise upgrades that increase attack speed or pierce early on.
  • Save expensive upgrades (tier 3+) for towers in high-traffic positions.
  • Don't over-upgrade a tower in a low-traffic spot — that money is better spent elsewhere.

5. Use a Tack Shooter at Chokepoints

Tack Shooters fire in 8 directions simultaneously, making them incredibly effective when placed at tight bends or narrow chokepoints. A fully upgraded Tack Shooter can single-handedly clear large groups of bloons in its zone.

6. Always Keep a Cash Reserve

Don't spend every coin the moment you earn it. Tough rounds can sneak up on you — especially Ceramic and MOAB-class bloons. Having cash in reserve lets you place an emergency tower if one section of your defence breaks down.

7. The Monkey Village Changes Everything

The Monkey Village is a support structure that buffs nearby towers. Its upgrades include:

  • Monkey Beacon: Increases attack speed of nearby towers.
  • Jungle Drums: Further speed boost for surrounding monkeys.

Place a Monkey Village in the middle of a cluster of your strongest towers for maximum efficiency.

8. Know Your MOAB-Class Bloons

MOAB-class bloons are boss-tier enemies that require serious firepower:

  • MOAB (Massive Ornary Air Blimp): First big threat. Multiple Bomb Towers and a Super Monkey handle it well.
  • BFB (Brutal Floating Behemoth): Contains 4 MOABs. Requires a well-developed late-game defence.
  • ZOMG (Zeppelin Of Mighty Gargantuaness): The ultimate threat. Plan your entire build around dealing with this.

Practice Makes Perfect

BTD is a game of iteration. Your first playthrough on a new map will rarely be perfect — and that's fine. Each attempt teaches you where your defence has gaps. Keep tweaking your tower placement and upgrade priorities, and you'll find the winning formula.
