What Is Bloxorz?
Bloxorz is a classic browser puzzle game where you control a rectangular block and must guide it into a square hole at the end of each stage. The challenge lies in the block's unique movement — it can stand upright, lie flat horizontally, or lie flat vertically — and each orientation matters when navigating narrow bridges and pressure-sensitive tiles.
Core Mechanics You Must Understand
- Block Orientation: Your block has three states — standing upright, lying east-west, or lying north-south. Only certain tiles can support the block when it's standing upright (heavy).
- Soft Tiles: Orange tiles with an "X" pattern will break if your block stands upright on them. Always cross them lying flat.
- Switches: Round switches activate by any part of the block. "X" switches are toggle switches. Some switches open bridges; others close them.
- Split Switches: Special switches split your block into two smaller cubes. You can toggle control between them using the spacebar.
General Strategy for Every Level
- Survey the board first. Before moving, scan the full layout. Identify soft tiles, switches, and the goal hole.
- Plan your orientation. Count moves ahead — you need to arrive at the hole standing upright (not flat).
- Activate switches in order. Some levels require activating switches in a specific sequence to keep bridges open.
- Use the split mechanic wisely. When split, position one cube on a switch while navigating the other to the goal.
Tips for the Hardest Levels (Levels 25–33)
The later stages of Bloxorz introduce multi-step split puzzles and complex switch chains. Here's how to approach them:
- Write down or mentally note which switches control which bridges before committing to a path.
- When using split blocks, park one block safely off critical tiles while you manoeuvre the other.
- If you're stuck, reset (press R) and try a completely different first move — sometimes the intuitive path is wrong.
- Count how many moves it takes to stand upright. An even number of rolls along one axis keeps orientation consistent.
Level Codes
Bloxorz provides a code for each level so you can resume your progress. Keep these codes saved — they save you from replaying earlier stages. You can enter a level code on the main screen to jump straight to any unlocked stage.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Rolling off the edge by not counting board boundaries carefully.
- Standing upright on soft tiles — always lie flat when crossing them.
- Forgetting to switch control between split blocks (press spacebar).
- Activating a toggle switch twice and undoing your progress.
With patience and the strategies above, every Bloxorz level is beatable. The key is to slow down, think in moves rather than reactions, and always know your block's current orientation before pressing an arrow key.
